In 1937, Amelia Earhart set out to circumnavigate the globe. In her attempt to become the first female aviator to fly around the world, she disappeared over the Pacific Ocean. After extensive search and rescue efforts, her final resting place remains unknown. Eighty years later, her disappearance is still shrouded in mystery. Amid all the theories and speculation, the truth still remains an enigma.

What clues can astrology offer? Were there cosmic forces at play? Was Amelia Earhart’s fate predetermined or just a series of unfortunate events? This post takes personal observations of her astrology chart(s) and tries to delineate the primary symbolisms in 1937.

In Part I, the birth chart (natal chart) is explained as a map of the heavens at the time of one’s birth. Part II outlines the eclipses for 1937 and compares them to Amelia Earhart’s chart. Eclipse cycles can bring desirable and undesirable changes. In Eclipses: Predicting World Events and Personal Transformation, Celeste Teal states, “eclipses reveal the escalating stepping-stones in our lives when we complete one of our prearranged tasks or are summoned to the next” (Teal, 2006, p. 96).  They initiate a period of time where “individuals are called to their personal destinies” (Teal, 2006, p. 98).

Cosmic Influences and A Mysterious Disappearance

Lunar Eclipse: May 25, 1937, at 3 Degrees Sagittarius

A Lunar Eclipse is associated with positive and negative endings, conclusions, and developmental cycles. It creates changes from within and stimulates emotional reactions to external events. The Lunar Eclipse was conjoined a critical degree that symbolically represents matters that are “grave, serious and climatic” (Teal). Critical degrees are very sensitive points (degrees) in the zodiac that are hotbeds of energy when activated. A Sagittarius eclipse can symbolize foreign lands and long-distance journeys. The Lord of the eclipse was Jupiter. Jupiter, also referred to as the ruler of Sagittarius was transiting the sign of Capricorn during the eclipse. Since Capricorn is ruled by Saturn the eclipse can “be symbolic of changes shaped by the passage of time” (Teal, 2006, p. 18).  Jupiter expands and accentuates the qualities and characteristics of the signs and aspects it makes. With difficult connections, it highlights the difficulties of misjudgment and loss through over-commitment, overconfidence, or speculation.

In Part I, Amelia Earhart’s 8th house cusp was noted to be at 4 degrees Sagittarius. The 8th house symbolizes many topics, including matters related to the dead or dying. In her chart, the eclipse stimulated her 8th house, conjoined the critical degree, and highlighted that something BIG was in the works with all the cosmic energy. The ruler of the eclipse and her 8th house is Jupiter at 10 degrees Virgo exactly conjoined Mars in the 5th house. With the ruler of her 8th house in her 5th house, it highlights the potential for loss and danger associated with misjudgment, carelessness, or speculation. When Mars is added to the mix, it brings an expansion of courage, bravery, ambition, and stamina. The destructive side can also emerge and accentuate impulsiveness, rash decisions, danger, and accidents.

Furthermore, the eclipse was also conjunct her natal Uranus and Saturn in Scorpio. Saturn, the Lord of Karma, is also referred to as the task masker and Father Time. It is characterized as the planet that completes or concludes an eclipse. Uranus is the ruler of aviation, electronics, flying, and wireless communications. With bad aspects, it can showcase the shadow side of the planet, and give an inclination towards abrupt changes and an accidental nature. Saturn has more of a restrictive nature that creates setbacks.

Finally, the eclipse was making aspects to her nodal axis which can emphasize an appointment with destiny. In addition, the asteroid Atlantis was at 7 degrees Sagittarius in her birth chart; conjoined the eclipse.  This asteroid can symbolize impending doom and water disasters. It can also represent sunken knowledge, information, and individuals who are ahead of their time. It represents a mythical, lost civilization. It is uncanny how the symbolism played out in Amelia Earhart’s chart.

Solar Eclipse on June 8, 1937, at 17 Degrees Gemini

A Solar Eclipse represents new beginnings. It initiates a process of planting the seeds and making a foundation for future growth. It initiates new ideas, experiences, and events. The area of one’s chart that it occurs in has the potential to create massive changes, chaos, or crisis. When it connects to planets or points in an individual’s chart, this is when the cosmic energies gain momentum.

Both of the eclipses occurred at critical degrees. Both of these degrees are prominent in Amelia Earhart’s chart. It was a double whammy! The Solar Eclipse was on the exact degree of her Venus, ruler of her physical body (ascendant), and a part of her powerful Gemini stellium (Moon, Pluto, and Neptune)! It also made a tough aspect to her Mars and Jupiter. All of these planets were activated by the Solar Eclipse. In her natal chart, Venus was at 17 degrees Gemini. As the ruler of her natal chart, it was receiving stressful contacts from the eclipse that highlighted her life force. At the time of her disappearance, the asteroid Atlantis had progressed to exactly 17 degrees Sagittarius and making a challenging aspect to the eclipse point and her Venus. What are the odds that two eclipses would make contact with her asteroid Atlantis?

One aspect that is almost haunting is her natal Mars square Pluto. With a positive aspect, it can manifest as a great drive towards accomplishing one’s goals. Yet, in a negative sense, it is associated with violence and trauma. There is the possibility to attract the danger with this aspect. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is another way to describe it. With this aspect, there would need to be a repetitive theme reiterated at least three times in the progressions, transits, and eclipse to activate the potential for danger. Unfortunately, it all lined up in Amelia Earhart’s chart. In fact, it was more than three times.

The Lord of the Eclipse was Mercury, ruler of both Gemini and Virgo. To give some perspective, Mercury rules communications and shows how an individual thinks and processes data. The reciprocal is also relevant in that Mercury also governs miscommunications. At the time of the eclipse, Mercury was at 23 degrees Taurus conjunct the Fixed Star Algol. Algol can symbolize impending doom. It was opposite transiting Mars at 21 Scorpio. Overall, the eclipse made more challenging aspects to the planets than beneficial ones. It also made a difficult aspect to Neptune, ruler of the oceans. Finally, it was in another difficult aspect to her progressed asteroid Atlantis!

What are the odds that she was born with two critical degrees that would be activated by two eclipses at the same time? To give you a perspective on how rare the critical degrees are, there are 12 zodiac signs and each sign has 30 degrees. That’s a total of 360 degrees with only 36 critical degrees. Evidently, the eclipses were the game changers that were developing the cosmic energy for something BIG to unfold in her life.

For Amelia Earhart, both of the eclipses made significant connections to her personal planets. With multiple contacts, it was evident to see that there was the potential for major events to manifest. In Part III, the transits and secondary progressions are compared to her natal planets and the eclipse points. According to Celeste Teal, “if the natal planet or point has been eclipsed, events tend to be more outstanding, sometimes spectacular, and sometimes lasting for years” (p.27).
