May ends with the opportunity to see the newly discovered comet SWAN. Are your binoculars ready? While this is a super cool opportunity for us Star Gazers, what does a comet represent? Does it even bring symbolism or mythology to us Earthling’s?

Look up to the sky during the week of May 22nd – 27th, and you will see this awesome phenomena. Just how rare is a comet sighting? As the most recognizable, Halley’s Comet is only visible every 75-76 years. Last seen in 1986, it will not re-appear until 2062. Yet, this comet has been making appearances as far back as Medieval Times.

When the World was ‘Flat’…

In ancient Greece, comets were considered omens associated with weather changes. The ancients viewed a comet as a predictor of floods, storms, drought, earthquakes, tsunamis, etc. The Romans had their own theories that comets were associated with war, death, and the birth or death of a king. Yet, during a time, when the world was considered ‘flat’, do the ancient myths cast a shadow over the fun, or does the old mythology resonate?

In ancient times, there were many taboos, superstitions, and beliefs associated with comets. It seems that the majority of comet sightings coincided with troubling times and events, but was that just because those were the events recorded? During the comet sightings, I am sure there were positive events, but history just didn’t seem to collectively embrace the optimistic side.

Whale or Sea Monster

First discovered on March 25, 2020 in the constellation Cetus, which has some doom and gloom from the ancients. In Greek mythology Cetus was the great sea monster called on by Poseidon (God of the Sea) to weak havoc on the land. The King (Cepheus) decided to sacrifice his daughter (Andromeda) to the monster; yet, she was saved by (Perseus) riding Pegasus. In ancient times, Star Gazers interpreted Cetus as a sea monster that brought disease and ruin. Yet, in modern astrology there is very minimal symbolism that takes these myths to a higher level of spiritual growth and consciousness through the symbolism.

SWAN

Celestially, Cetus is the whale representing the seer. Utilizing its own navigational tools, it is a reminder to listen to our inner voice. As it rises from the depths of the ocean, it will stir up the murky waters representing levels of consciousness. What lies hidden in the deep water? What can’t you see? What have you prevented from seeing with clarity?

In addition, Cetus can be associated with finding lost things or embracing a part of yourself that’s been lost or forgotten. Finally, whales can live up to 90 years, symbolic of the wisdom we learn from our elders or the collective wisdom gained with age.

Messages from the Universe?

Fast forward to modern times. Do comets have any symbolism or celestial message? Some say the moment a comet becomes ‘perihelion’, or reaches the closet point to the Sun, it will connect to the energetic symbolism of the stars or planets nearby. So, on May 26th, 2020 at 5:34 am SWAN will reach perihelion. Simultaneously, it will be in the constellation of Perseus and connected to the Star Capella giving it a free spirit theme that can represent a need for freedom and independence.

Animal Totems

In animal symbolism, both swan and whale are related to water. Thus, the water element energies of intuition, emotions, and sensitivities play a key role into understanding its energetic message. Swan represents healing, transformation, and intuitive abilities. The whale represents the emotional levels of consciousness, perceptiveness, wisdom, and communication.

For the week ahead, is there a way to integrate the cosmic energies to tap into something deep within you that has been forgotten? Perhaps, whatever emotions, wisdom, or feelings that have been sidelined are ready to emerge. Food for thought as we all embrace the cosmic message as the comet reaches its closest connection to the Sun this week.

Me, Myself, and I?

To get a grip on all this cosmic energy, the key is to know your natal chart. You need to look and see where the comet SWAN will be transiting in your chart by house and see what angles or planets it connects with. This is where Cetus will bring wisdom and knowledge, while Capella will highlight the urge for independence and freedom.
